What NOT to Wear for Senior Pictures: A Guide for Senior Guys

, , , , , , ,

Simple outfit choices can make a huge difference in creating senior portraits that stand the test of time.

One of the biggest misconceptions about senior photos is that guys don’t need to think much about wardrobe.

The truth? What you wear has a major impact on the final look of your portraits.

As a Milwaukee senior photographer, here are some common mistakes I recommend avoiding when planning your senior session.

1. Oversized Clothing

Baggy shirts, oversized hoodies, and loose-fitting pants can make you appear larger and less polished in photos.

Choose clothing that fits well without being overly tight.

2. Athletic Shorts

Unless sports are a major part of your session, athletic shorts usually don’t photograph as well as jeans, chinos, or tailored shorts.

Aim for a more elevated look.

3. Graphic Tees with Large Designs

Large graphics, slogans, and logos often distract from the portrait itself.

Simple, solid-colored shirts tend to create a cleaner, more timeless look.

4. Wrinkled Clothing

Wrinkles show up more than most people realize.

A quick steam or ironing session before your photos can make a huge difference.

5. Outdated Athletic Shoes

Worn-out sneakers often become more noticeable in photos than expected.

Bring a clean pair of shoes that complement your outfits.

6. Too Much Black

Black can look great, but wearing all black from head to toe can sometimes lose detail in photographs.

Mixing in texture, layers, or complementary colors often creates a stronger image.

7. Clothing That Doesn’t Feel Like You

The goal isn’t to look like someone else.

Your senior portraits should reflect your personality, interests, and style. Choose clothing that feels authentic and comfortable.

Outfit Ideas for Senior Guys

Consider bringing:

  • A casual everyday outfit
  • A button-down shirt
  • A layered look with a jacket
  • Team uniform or letter jacket
  • College apparel
  • Clothing that represents your hobbies

The best senior portraits are the ones that feel genuine and capture who you are during this exciting season of life.  Contact me today to book your session!

Senior Picture FAQ: Everything You Need to Know Before Your Session

, , , , , , ,

The complete guide for seniors and parents preparing for an amazing portrait experience.

If you’re planning senior photos, you probably have questions—and that’s completely normal.

To make the process easier, I’ve gathered the questions I hear most often from seniors and parents before, during, and after their session.

When should I book my senior pictures?

The best time to book is several months in advance, especially if you’re hoping for summer or fall dates. These seasons are typically the most popular.

When should I take my senior pictures?

Most seniors schedule their sessions during the summer before senior year or in early fall.

What should I wear?

Choose outfits that reflect your personality while remaining comfortable and flattering. I recommend a mix of casual and dressy looks.

How many outfits can I bring?

Most seniors bring multiple outfit options to create variety throughout their gallery.

Can my parents come?

Absolutely. Parents are always welcome and often enjoy being part of the experience.

What if I’m awkward in front of the camera?

You’re not alone. Most seniors tell me this before their session.

My job is to guide you through natural poses and interactions so you never have to wonder what to do.

Can I bring props?

Yes. Sports equipment, musical instruments, books, vehicles, pets, and other meaningful items can help personalize your session.

Can I bring a friend?

Some seniors feel more comfortable bringing a friend for support. Just check with me beforehand.

What happens if the weather is bad?

If weather becomes an issue, we’ll simply reschedule or adjust plans as needed.

Can I include my pet?

Absolutely. Pets often make senior sessions even more meaningful.

How long does a senior session last?

Session length varies, but most portrait experiences last between one and three hours depending on locations and outfit changes.

Do you help with posing?

Yes. Every step of the way.

You’ll receive guidance throughout the session so you can feel comfortable and confident.

How long until I see my photos?

Turnaround times vary throughout the year, but you’ll receive details during your consultation and session planning process.

Can I order prints and albums?

Absolutely. Professional prints, wall art, albums, and other keepsakes are available so your images can be enjoyed for years to come.

Do you photograph seniors outside Milwaukee?

Yes. I work with seniors throughout Milwaukee and surrounding communities and am happy to discuss destination sessions as well.

Final Thoughts

Senior year is an exciting milestone, and your portraits should be a reflection of who you are right now.

If you have additional questions, I’d love to help. My goal is to make the experience fun, stress-free, and unforgettable from beginning to end.

What NOT to Wear for Senior Pictures: A Guide for Senior Girls

, , , , , , ,

Avoid these common outfit mistakes to create timeless, flattering senior pictures you’ll love for years.

Senior year only happens once, and your senior portraits should feel like you—not a trend you’ll regret in five years.

As a Milwaukee senior photographer, one of the most common questions I receive is, “What should I wear for my senior pictures?” While choosing the right outfits is important, knowing what NOT to wear can be just as helpful.

Here are a few things I recommend avoiding when planning your senior photo session.

1. Clothing Covered in Large Logos

Big logos, brand names, and graphics tend to pull attention away from the most important part of your portraits—you.

Instead, choose outfits with clean lines and subtle details that keep the focus on your face and personality.

2. Extremely Trendy Pieces

Fashion trends come and go quickly. While it’s perfectly fine to include one trendy outfit if it reflects your style, I recommend making sure at least a few of your looks are classic and timeless.

Think elegant dresses, well-fitted jeans, neutral sweaters, and simple silhouettes.

3. Neon Colors

Bright neon shades can create color casts on your skin and become distracting in photographs.

Soft pastels, jewel tones, earth tones, and neutrals typically photograph much more beautifully.

4. Ill-Fitting Clothing

Outfits that are too tight, too loose, or constantly need adjusting can make it difficult to relax and feel confident.

Choose pieces that fit comfortably and allow you to move naturally throughout your session.

5. Busy Patterns

Small, repetitive patterns and overly busy prints can be distracting and sometimes create unwanted visual effects in photos.

When in doubt, solid colors or subtle patterns are always a safe choice.

6. Wrinkled Clothing

Even the most beautiful outfit can look less polished if it’s wrinkled.

Take a few extra minutes before your session to steam or iron your clothing so everything looks fresh and camera-ready.

7. Shoes You Can’t Walk In

If we’re photographing in multiple locations, you’ll likely be walking between spots.

Bring comfortable shoes for moving around and save the heels for the actual photos.

My Best Advice

Bring a variety of outfits that showcase different sides of your personality. Consider including:

    • A dressy outfit

    • A casual outfit

    • Something connected to your hobbies or activities

    • School or college apparel

    • A favorite outfit that makes you feel confident

The best senior portraits happen when you feel comfortable, confident, and completely yourself.
